*Workshop Objects 4:* *Drugs, living things and the problems of

standardization* (Organization: Wahrig / Place: Braunschweig, D)

Within the frame of DRUGS – the ESF funded network on “Standard drugs and drug standards” - the announced workshop will focus on substances that have no common classification: biologicals. We define “biologicals”

as pharmaceuticals that are of “biological origin”, in the sense that they originate from organisms no matter which place in the taxonomy the take. The emphasis, however is on humans/higher organisms on one hand and medicinal plants on the other hand. Examples are vaccines und sera, hormones, vitamines, enzymes, macromolecules, bodily fluids (blood, sperm,...), and active substances from medicinal plants.

The workshop will focus on 20^th century, but will also draw some comparison with 19^th century and will not exclude the perspective into 21^st century. According to the DRUGS framework the general interest lies with the transformation of pharmacy, with industrialization, mass production and consumption under an international perspective.

One of the leading questions is: How are the borders between "natural", artificial", between medicinal/pharmaceutical and nutritional negotiated, how do they shift?

We welcome abstracts concerning the history of “biologicals” in 20th century, especially with a focus like:

1. biologicals as threats to standardization or as motors of standardization

2. borders between the natural/the artificial / the medicinal / the nutritional.

3. Dealing with the consumer's perspective

4. Regulating Gender relationships, colonial aspects of the activation and regulation of biologicals.
